
Snowfall in Troodos Mountains
The unique combination of sunshine and snow have made winter holidays in Cyprus a popular choice of holidaymakers for many years.
The heavy snowfalls in the Troodos Mountains have been a bonus for holiday skiers this year but show, coupled with high winds and heavy rains have created difficult conditions elsewhere.
Cyprus police was issued a warning of dangerous driving condition across Cyprus this week with the holiday resort of Paphos suffering torrential rain and reports of landslides in the Larnaca region.
Police recommend drivers use snow chains when heading for the Troodos Mountains and to look out for ice patches on roads, especially in the early morning.
The cold, wet Cyprus weather is likely to continue for several days this week, warn weather forecasters, with temperatures about 17°C on the coast, !5°C inland and around 5°C in the mountains.
Although sunshine will make an appearance this week it will be mostly cloudy across Cyprus, with local showers and isolated thunderstorms. Snow is again expected to on Troodos and other mountain areas.
Despite the recent heavy rainfall, experts have warned of a water shortage on Cyprus this year with reservoir levels still well behind last year
Both locals and holiday visitors have been asked to be prudent with water use to prevent cuts in supply in next summer’s holiday season.
The annual water shortage problem of Cyprus should be eased this year with the construction of two desalination plants. One at Episkopi in the Limassol district is expected to open in May while another at nearby Vassiliko should be operational by the end of 2012.
