Othello Tower to get a revamp

Eurozone cash may be in short supply but the EC has launched a €2 million project to preserve cultural sites on Cyprus, both in the north and south of the island.

Holiday visitors to Famagusta, in particular, have been shocked at the state of many ancient monuments, with the famous Othello Tower in Famagusta branded as in a ‘disgusting’ state of neglect.

Now the EU cash will be used to carry out emergency clean-up and repair work on six sites in Cyprus, including the Othello Tower.

Many holiday couples in Cyprus will opt to hold their wedding in the romantic castle port setting of the Paphos Cyprus holiday resort.

Now they will have no problem in choosing a photographer for the wedding after a Paphos photographer picked up a top wedding photography award.

Paphos photographer Andreas Evzonas, 52, was thrilled to get the top award for worldwide bridal portrait photographer of the year 2011 at a ceremony held in London by the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers.

Visitors on a holiday to Cyprus will soon be able to enjoy two famous byzantine frescoes dating back to the 13th century which have returned to Cyprus after many years.

Two large containers carried the frescoes on a specially chartered flight from the United States where they have been on display in Houston, Texas, for the past 15 years.

The set of 13th century Byzantine frescoes — plundered after Turkey invaded Cyprus in 1974 are home at last in what has turned out to be a remarkable odyssey.

Cyprus plans drastic cuts in the numbers of poisonous puffer fish found in seas off the Cyprus holiday coast.

Bathers in Cyprus holiday resorts are frequently warned to be on the lookout for a poisonous puffer fish which is proliferating in waters of the eastern Mediterranean.

The poisonous fish has a powerful toxin that can cause muscle paralysis and breathing difficulties.

Heavy rains may have put a damper on Cyprus winter holidays this year but they have helped boost bird visitor numbers.

According to the Cyprus Game Fund more than 21,000 fowl, mostly flamingos, were recorded across Cyprus in December – the second highest number of aquatic birds ever.

The highest numbers were spotted in the Larnaca area, with the region’s salt flats attracting over 10,000 flamingos.

Church bells ringing is a common feature of Cyprus life these days and any visitor on holiday in Larnaca Cyprus will certainly have heard them ringing out on Sunday morning.

But the holiday resort has been shocked to hear of bells stolen from two churches in the area recently. Other than the theft of a few religious icons from remote chapels, crimes against church property are virtually unknown in Cyprus.

But thieves snatched bells from two churches in the Larnaca holiday area, near to the Kiti dam, in what police believe was a well planned operation.

The heavy snowfalls in the Troodos Mountains have been a bonus for holiday skiers this year but show, coupled with high winds and heavy rains have created difficult conditions elsewhere.

Cyprus police was issued a warning of dangerous driving condition across Cyprus this week with the holiday resort of Paphos suffering torrential rain and reports of landslides in the Larnaca region.

Winter snow in Troodos Cyprus

British pensioners who enjoyed Cyprus beach holidays  so much they retired to live there have picked up over €5 million to help them keep warm over winter.

An estimated 21,000 expat pensioners who now live on Cyprus are still eligible for the winter fuel handout.

Under EU rules the pensioners are entitled to winter weather payments – worth up to €357 a year – no matter where they live.

Cyprus visitor numbers up in 2011

Hopes are high that tourist holidays in Cyprus will rise in 2012 after visitors numbers for 2011 have so far risen more than 10%.

Cyprus Tourism Minister, Praxoulia Antoniadou, told a meeting of Cyprus hotel managers that Cyprus tourist arrivals by October were up 10.6% on last year.

According to latest figures, Cyprus holiday visitors are also spending more, with revenue from tourism related businesses up 13.6% over the same period.
